Zimmermann Model 135 — a baby grand of German origin, 135 cm long, in walnut, high gloss.
It fits homes where a grand would really be too big: adults coming back to the instrument, pupils who ought to learn on a grand action, and rooms where the instrument is also a piece of furniture.
135 cm is the shortest class of grand, and that has one plain consequence: the bass strings here are no longer than on a tall upright. If bass length is what you are after, you will find more of it there. A baby grand is chosen for the action and for the way it stands: the hammer falls back under its own weight, repetition comes faster than on an upright, and the raised lid sends the sound into the room instead of at the wall. Two pedals: the right lifts the dampers, the left shifts the action. There is no sostenuto in the middle.
The walnut veneer is polished to a high gloss and the grain stays visible. Gloss shows dust and fingerprints more plainly than a satin surface; a soft, dry cloth is the whole of its care.
At 135 × 142.5 cm the grand covers just under 2 m², plus room to sit and for the open lid. It goes through an ordinary door only in pieces, with the legs and lyre off; a grand of this size weighs several hundred kilograms and is carried by movers. Not by the radiator, not in the sun — swings in humidity put any instrument out of tune. If you play in the evening and have neighbours behind the wall, an acoustic grand can have a Silent System fitted, and you practise on through headphones.
