Stingl 128 — an upright 128 cm high, in mahogany with a shellac polish.
128 cm is a tall upright: for a living room with the space, for teaching, and for anyone who finds the bass of a small piano too thin. Stingl is a Viennese name.
The height pays off at the bottom end: longer bass strings, more soundboard, a bass with a foundation under it that a 105 cannot give. Two pedals, and here the left one is a practice pedal: it slides a strip of felt between hammers and strings and takes the instrument well back — exactly what an evening in a flat asks for. The right holds the note.
A shellac polish on mahogany is a surface with rules: no water, no alcohol, no heat. Set nothing damp on it, and dust it dry and softly.
The piano stands against the wall, 150 cm wide. At 66 cm it is deeper than most — an 80 cm door takes it, but measure the way there, landing and turn included. An upright of this height is carried by movers, not by friends. Not by the radiator and not in the sun: swings in humidity put it out of tune.
