August Förster upright — an upright from Löbau in Saxony, 128 cm tall, black high gloss under a shellac polish, 85 keys, two pedals.
August Förster has built in the same town since the middle of the nineteenth century and is still in family hands. 128 cm is the top of the upright range: the bass strings are as long as an upright allows and the soundboard is sized to match — more bass than that is to be had only in a grand. The right pedal holds the note; the left brings the hammers nearer the strings and plays softer. There is no practice rail for quiet work; a Silent System can be fitted instead, and you play on headphones with the same keys. Of today's 88 keys the top three are missing — through to the Romantics that makes no difference, in some later pieces it does.
For players who want a large upright, and for rooms that no grand will fit.
The shellac polish is delicate: no water, no alcohol, nothing hot set on it, only a dry soft cloth. The piano stands against the wall, 156 cm wide and 66 cm deep — measure your doors. It weighs 250 kg; stairs are work for piano movers. Keep it away from radiators and from the sun.
