Hyundai U822 — an upright in high-gloss white, 116 cm tall, 149.5 cm wide and 57 cm deep.
Hyundai is one of the Korean makes built for hard-wearing series production: meant for teaching, for the music school, and for the living room where somebody practises every day.
116 cm sits in the middle of the home range. The bass strings are longer than on the very compact models, so the bass stands firmer without the instrument taking over the wall.
Three pedals: the right holds the note, the left softens it, and the middle one lowers a strip of felt between hammers and strings and makes practice quiet — useful when somebody is asleep next door.
High-gloss white reflects the room and suits a light space; dust shows on it less than on black lacquer, scratches rather more. A dry, soft cloth is all it needs.
The piano goes against the wall, with room to sit in front of it; at 57 cm deep it goes through any ordinary door. It is heavy all the same — above the ground floor it is carried by movers. Not by the radiator, not in the sun. If you play in the evening, an acoustic upright can have a Silent System fitted, and you practise in headphones.
