Kawai KL-601 — a Japanese upright of 132 cm, high-gloss mahogany, 88 keys, three pedals.

Kawai has built in Hamamatsu since the 1920s; the KL series was the line for the Japanese market, in wood veneer rather than black lacquer. 132 cm is the ceiling of what is built as an upright: bass strings and soundboard as large as the vertical form allows, and the bass full to match. Three pedals — the right holds the note, the left plays softer, the middle one lowers the felt strip for quiet practice.

For pianists who do not need the scale of a grand but want the substance of a large upright; for teaching, and for the living room where the instrument counts as furniture too.

The mahogany veneer lies under high gloss: wipe fingerprints away with a soft cloth, and keep the sun off it, since sun bleaches the wood. The piano stands against the wall, 155 cm wide, 66 cm deep — measure the doors and the lift. It weighs 230 kg; stairs are work for piano movers. Not by the radiator. If you practise in the evening, a Silent System can be fitted and you play in headphones.
