Rösler 180 — a Czech-built grand, 180 cm long and 148 cm wide, black under a high-gloss shellac polish.
Rösler comes out of the east Bohemian piano-building tradition around Hradec Králové, and the name stands for solid central European grands in the salon format. 180 cm is the length a living room can live with: more bass string than any upright holds, less than a concert grand.
A grand action lies flat, the keys return under their own weight, and notes repeat faster than they do on an upright. Eighty-eight keys.
Two pedals: the right lifts the dampers, the left shifts the action. There is no sostenuto in the middle; for most of the literature that never comes up, for a few pieces it does.
High gloss shows every fingerprint and every speck of dust, and it wants dusting more often than a satin surface. The polish is shellac: no water, no alcohol, no heat.
Reckon on about 3.5 m² including the space to sit. The grand goes through the door on its side with the legs off; 310 kg is lifted by piano movers, not by two strong friends. Keep it clear of the radiator and the sun — swings in humidity cost you the tuning. For the late hours, an acoustic grand can have a Silent System fitted, and the playing then goes into headphones.
