Hagspiel & Comp 180 — a grand of 180 cm in black high gloss, shellac-polished, with two pedals.
Hagspiel & Comp is a piano maker from Dresden; instruments of this length sit midway between a salon grand and a concert grand. At 180 cm the bass has more speaking length than any upright, if a good deal less than a concert grand, and a grand action repeats faster than any upright action: trills and repeated notes come more readily off the hand.
A choice for a living room where somebody plays regularly, for advanced pupils, and for anyone moving up from an upright to a grand. Two pedals: the right holds the note, the left shifts the action and makes the tone quieter and softer. There is no sostenuto; if your repertoire calls for one, better to know now.
The shellac polish asks for some consideration: no water, no alcohol, no hot cups — a dry, soft cloth is enough. High gloss shows fingerprints, but shellac can be brought up again and again without taking the finish off.
The grand is 140 cm wide; with somewhere to sit, allow about 3.5 m². For a move the legs come off and the case goes through an ordinary door on edge. It weighs 300 kg: movers with grand-piano experience, not friends. Not by the radiator, not in the sun. And if you practise in the evening, an acoustic grand can have a Silent System fitted, and you play with headphones on the same keys.
