Ehrbar 142 — a Viennese upright, 142 cm tall, in high-gloss black.
An instrument for those who play seriously at home, for the teaching room and for the small hall. Ehrbar is one of the old Viennese piano houses, and the 142 format comes from a time when an upright was allowed to be tall.
142 cm is a great deal of piano: well above the usual home height, with longer bass strings and a larger soundboard. In the bass an instrument like this comes closer to a small grand than to a 120. Two pedals: the right holds the note, the left softens it. There is no felt strip for quiet practice; the middle pedal is not there.
High gloss reflects. Fingerprints and window light show on it, so a soft cloth belongs within reach.
The case is 163 cm wide and 66.5 cm deep; it stands against the wall and at that depth goes through an ordinary door. Not by the radiator and not in the sun: swings in humidity put it out of tune. At 245 kg and at this height, moving it is a job for piano movers, not for willing friends. If you practise in the evening and have neighbours behind the wall, a Silent System can be fitted and you play with headphones on the same keys.
