Hofmann Model 141 — an upright 141 cm tall, black high gloss, in shellac polish.

For players who want to hear something real in the bass, for teaching, and for rooms with a decent stretch of wall.

141 cm is the top end of upright building. The strings come close to the length of a small grand's, and the bass is markedly fuller than at 115 or 120 cm. The tall case has a second consequence: the lid sits above eye level, the music desk stands higher, and the sound travels over the player into the room. Two pedals: the right holds the note, the left softens it; there is no felt strip for quiet practice.

The polish is shellac — no water, no alcohol, no heat. A soft, dry cloth is enough; and in high gloss no fingerprint stays invisible.

The piano stands against the wall; at 66 cm deep it reaches further into the room than a compact model, but it still goes through an ordinary door. Count on room to sit and a good 1.2 m². Not by the radiator, not in the sun. At 245 kg, any move above the ground floor is work for movers. If you practise late and have neighbours, an acoustic upright can have a Silent System fitted, and you play on through headphones.
