Blüthner Model 122 — an upright from Leipzig, 122 cm tall, black high gloss, in shellac polish.
It suits adults who play the repertoire, teaching at home, and rooms where the instrument is also there to be seen.
122 cm is above the usual home height: the strings are longer than on a compact upright and the bass is fuller to match. The keyboard has 85 keys rather than 88 — enough for the greater part of the repertoire, but if the top notes stand in your scores, better to know beforehand. Two pedals: the right holds the note, the left softens it; there is no felt strip for quiet practice.
The polish is shellac: no water, no alcohol, no heat. Dust comes off dry with a soft cloth — and in high gloss every fingerprint shows.
The piano stands against the wall and, with room to sit, takes a good 1 m². At 62.5 cm deep it goes through an ordinary door. Not by the radiator and not in the sun. At 240 kg, anything above the ground floor is work for movers. If you practise in the evening and have neighbours, an acoustic upright can have a Silent System fitted, and you play on through headphones.
