C. Bechstein 113 — a German-built upright, 113 cm tall, in oak with a satin surface.
C. Bechstein has been building in Berlin since the nineteenth century, and the house is known for a clear, transparent line — you hear your own fingers. For teaching and for practice at home that is a useful trait.
113 cm is the compact height. The bass strings are shorter than in a 125 or a 130, so the bass comes out leaner; through the middle and the treble the height changes little.
Two pedals: the right holds the note, the left brings the hammers nearer the strings and takes volume out. There is no felt strip for quiet practice in this layout — but an acoustic upright can have a Silent System fitted, and then you practise in headphones on the same keys.
A satin surface picks up fingerprints and window glare far less than high gloss; a dry cloth is all the dusting it wants.
The piano stands against the wall, 148 cm wide and 60 cm deep, so it passes through any ordinary door; in front of it you want room to sit. 240 kg is lifted by piano movers. Do not stand it by a radiator or in direct sunlight: swings in humidity pull it out of tune.
