Zeitter & Winkelmann 190 — a grand of 190 cm in black high gloss, shellac-polished, with two pedals.
Zeitter & Winkelmann comes from Braunschweig, and the firm is known for solidly built grands in the German manner. 190 cm is already more salon than living room: the bass gets noticeably longer strings than on a 160, the instrument carries in a larger room, and the grand action repeats faster than an upright ever could.
For a house with a music room, for teachers who give lessons at home, and for pianists who play chamber music and want a partner that holds its own beside violin and cello. Two pedals: the right holds the note, the left shifts the action and lets the hammers strike fewer strings. There is no sostenuto — something to weigh up for repertoire that calls for one.
Shellac is a natural-resin polish: water, alcohol and heat leave marks, and a dry, soft cloth is all it needs. In return it can be brought up again and again without taking the finish off.
The grand is 144 cm wide and 97.5 cm high; with somewhere to sit, allow a good 3.5 m², which in a small room leaves little space for anything else. Legs off, on edge, through the door — the route is routine, but at 320 kg it is strictly for movers with grand-piano experience. Away from the radiator and the window, or the tuning will not hold.
