Yamaha C3 — a grand of 186 cm, black high gloss, 88 keys, two pedals.
The C3 is the middle model of Yamaha's C series and has for decades been the working instrument of music schools, conservatoires and recording studios: big enough for serious repertoire, small enough for a teaching room. At 186 cm it carries far more bass string than any upright, if less than a concert grand, and the grand action repeats faster because the hammers fall back under their own weight. The right pedal holds the note, the left shifts the action and makes the tone slimmer. There is no third pedal here.
For pianists who practise daily, for the teaching room, and for anyone who wants a grand at home without housing a concert size.
The grand stands free, the open lid towards the middle of the room. At 186 × 144 cm allow a good three and a half square metres including somewhere to sit. It weighs around 300 kg; doors, stairs and lifts are work for piano movers. Radiators and sun are best avoided, since swings in humidity put any instrument out of tune. High gloss is looked after with a soft, dry cloth. If you play in the evening, a Silent System can be fitted and you practise in headphones.
