Bösendorfer 180 — a Viennese grand, 180 cm long and 146 cm wide, in mahogany under a satin shellac polish (French polish).
Bösendorfer has been building in Vienna since the nineteenth century, and the house is known for a carrying bass and a calm, unforced treble. The 180 is the smallest of the classic salon lengths: far more bass string than any upright can hold, far less than a concert grand — the length a living room can still live with.
The action lies flat and drops back into place under its own weight. Notes repeat faster than they do on an upright, and trills and quick repetitions come out clean. Eighty-eight keys.
Two pedals: the right lifts the dampers, the left shifts the action (una corda). There is no middle pedal, so anyone whose repertoire calls for sostenuto should take that into account.
The shellac polish is kept satin: no water, no alcohol, no heat source, no damp cloth. Dust comes off dry, and because the surface is satin, fingerprints hardly show.
The grand stands free in the room and wants about 3.5 m² once you count somewhere to sit. It goes through the door on its side with the legs off; 320 kg, though, is a matter for piano movers. Keep it away from the radiator and out of direct sun, or the humidity swings and it drifts out of tune sooner. If you play in the evening and have neighbours: an acoustic grand can have a Silent System fitted, and the same playing then runs into headphones.
