Yamaha U1A — a Japanese upright, 121 cm tall, in satin wood veneer.
The piano for everyone who practises in earnest: pupils getting on, students, teachers. The U1 is the upright that stands in music schools and conservatoires the world over.
The U series has been Yamaha's teaching upright for decades, and the U1's 121 cm is its standard height: long bass strings for the home format, and a bass noticeably fuller than in the compact uprights. Three pedals: the right holds the note, the left softens it, and the middle one lowers the felt strip — so you can practise late without waking the neighbours.
The satin veneer shows the grain of the wood, hardly any fingerprints and no reflection from the window; a dry cloth is enough.
150 cm wide, 61 cm deep, about 1 m² against the wall with the stool. It goes through an ordinary door. Not by the radiator, not in the sun: swings in humidity put it out of tune. It weighs 228 kg, and above the ground floor only movers carry it. If you want it quieter still, a Silent System can be fitted and you play in headphones.
