Yamaha G5 — a grand 197 cm long, polished black.
The G series was Yamaha's earlier line of grands, out of which the C series later grew; within it the G5 is the 197 cm size, a salon grand. That length sits halfway between a living-room grand and a concert instrument: the bass strings are long enough for the bottom octave to speak clearly rather than thickly, and the tone fills a large room without a concert grand being needed for it.
An instrument for people who play seriously: for pianists who work at home, for piano classes, for small halls and churches. For a first year at the piano it is too much grand — not in skill, but in floor space. Two pedals: the right holds the note, the left shifts the action so that the hammers strike fewer strings and the tone narrows.
Black high gloss is the classic finish, and it shows every fingerprint; a dry microfibre cloth is all it takes.
With the stool the grand needs a good 2.5 × 1.5 m, so about 4 m², and it stands free in the room — the lid opens to the left. Away from the radiator and the sun: swings in humidity put it out of tune. It weighs 340 kg and goes through the door only with the legs off, on edge on the board — work for piano movers. If you have neighbours, a Silent System can be fitted and you practise with headphones on the same action.
